IPL-5 starts from 4 April 2012

The dates of the fifth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2012 have been confirmed. The tournament will begin in Chennai on 4 April 2012, and end on 27 May 2012. An opening ceremony will be held in Chennai on 3 April, a day before the inaugural game.

For the third time in a row, the Pakistan players have been snubbed by the Indian Premier League, which means there will be no Pak players in the next season of the T20 league.

IPL’s newly appointed chairman Rajiv Shukla, who had earlier said that it would be up to the franchises to take a decision on Pakistan players whether to buy them or not, said: “Pakistan players issue was not even in the agenda. So there is no question of discussion.”

The IPL Governing Council is yet to work out a plan to help the players left in lurch after Kochi’s axing but,

the league’s boss Rajiv Shukla on Friday assured that the interest of the affected players will be protected.

“We will decide on that in the next Governing Council meeting, Kochi players or others. But we will fully protect the interests of the players,” he told reporters after a meeting of the Governing Council. The Kochi franchise has been scrapped for breach of contractual obligations.

It was also learnt that Kochi players like S Sreesanth, Mahela Jayawardene, Muttiah Muralidharan and VVS Laxman may be up for auction. As in the past, there will be a trading window towards the end of 2011, with the auction to follow. The teams also have the option of buying out contracts to make space for new players.
